Companion Mode: Turning the Autonomous Cabin Into a GPS-Triggered Tour Guide

A browser-based, GPS-triggered narration layer opened on the rider's own phone — no hardware, no operator integration, and it restores the one thing autonomy removes: the driver who knew the city.

Autonomy deletes the driver. In a commuting context nobody misses them. In a tourism context the driver was the product — the commentary, the recommendation, the answer to 'what is that building?'. Companion mode is the attempt to put that back without hardware in the vehicle.

How it works

The rider opens a page on their own phone at the start of the ride. The browser's geolocation API tracks position; when the vehicle enters a geofence around a landmark, the page triggers narration in the rider's chosen language via synthesized speech. No app install, no operator integration, no in-vehicle screen required.

Because it runs in the browser on the rider's device, it works in any vehicle — an AV, a conventional taxi, or a hire car. That portability is the point: the experience layer is not locked to one fleet.

Design constraints that decide whether it feels premium or gimmicky

• Narration must be short. Thirty to sixty seconds per landmark, not a lecture.

• Geofences need generous entry radii and hard cooldowns so a stop in traffic does not replay the same segment.

• Audio must duck cleanly and never talk over an operator safety announcement.

• Battery and data budget matter — a rider whose phone dies mid-tour will not return.

• Silence is a feature. A mute-for-this-leg control should be one tap away.

Where the money is

Narration itself can be free or premium, but the higher-value moment is contextual: as the vehicle passes a district, offer a timed reservation, a tax-free retail location, or an experience booking relevant to where the rider is right now and how much of their evening remains. That is commerce with better context than any static ad placement in the city.
