An Open Letter to Nuro: You Built the Driver. Tokyo Still Needs the Front Door.
Nuro's universal autonomy platform solves the hardest technical problem in Tokyo. The remaining problem is how a person books, understands and pays for the ride.
Nuro has done something genuinely difficult: taken a universal autonomy model to the other side of the road and the other side of the world, and driven Tokyo autonomously without prior local training data.
This is written in admiration, and with one observation.
The layer you deliberately do not own
Nuro's model is to license the driver to automakers and mobility providers. That is a strong, focused strategy — and it means the rider-facing surface belongs to partners, in a city where those partners will be plural.
Whoever holds the neutral front door in Tokyo will shape how the whole category is discovered.
What we are proposing
robotaxi.tokyo is the exact-match, plain-language address for the category in this city. We are an early-stage group building a booking, ticketing and multilingual concierge concept on top of it. Nothing is live.
