Nuro, Waymo, Wayve with Nissan and Uber, GO with domestic taxi partners — a clear-eyed map of who is operating what, and at what stage.
Tokyo now hosts several distinct autonomous programmes at different maturities. Keeping them straight matters, because the consumer experience they will collectively produce is the thing nobody is designing yet.
The programmes
Nuro is driving autonomously with safety operators in Japan on a universal autonomy platform, following an announced office and data-collection phase. Waymo has taken its vehicles to Tokyo in partnership with local taxi operators. Wayve is working with Nissan and Uber on a Tokyo pilot. Domestic platforms including GO continue to expand ride-hailing infrastructure and taxi partnerships.
Each has a different corporate structure: licensor, vertically integrated operator, technology partner, and domestic demand aggregator.
What they have in common
All of them arrive with safety operators, all of them work through local partners and authorities, and none of them is currently offering a unified public consumer experience across the city.
Fragmentation at the consumer layer is the predictable result, and it is exactly what a neutral booking and concierge layer would resolve.
