Inbound Tourism Meets Supervised Autonomy: The Tokyo Demand Nobody Is Serving Yet
Record inbound visitor numbers and a growing supervised AV fleet are converging. The missing piece is a multilingual way to book and understand the ride.
Japan's inbound visitor numbers have been running at record levels, and Tokyo captures a large share. Visitors are exactly the segment most willing to pay for reliable point-to-point transport and least equipped to navigate a fragmented one.
Supervised fleets are still a product
A vehicle with a safety operator is not a lesser product for a tourist. It is a premium, predictable, English-friendly ride in a city where language remains a genuine barrier to spontaneous travel.
Nuro, Waymo and Wayve programmes all currently run supervised. That is a serviceable market today, not a future one.
What is missing
No neutral surface exists where a visitor can see what autonomous or AV-adjacent services are available in Tokyo, in their language, with clear pricing and a route explanation.
Building that surface is the roadmap concept behind robotaxi.tokyo — a booking and concierge layer above the fleets, not a competitor to them.
Where robotaxi.tokyo fits
robotaxi.tokyo is an early-stage project and a strategic domain asset — nothing is live yet. Our thesis is that Tokyo's autonomous fleets will need a neutral, consumer-facing booking, ticketing and concierge layer that sits above any single operator. The domain is open for acquisition or seed partnership: andrew.mc@nousdomains.com.
